What an ezine is, and is not.

Ezines are electronic magazines. They are also known as newsletters. An ezine is written around a specific topic. It might be about travel or dogs or making money online. Individuals publish ezines and so do companies–both large and small.

Ezines are “electronic magazines” and therefore the content is sent to subscribers via email, as opposed to arriving in their mailbox. Like a printed magazine, ezines are sent only to subscribers who requested them. This is an important part of why advertising in ezines is effective. The subscriptions are completely permission based, which means that the reader becomes a subscriber by visiting the website of the ezine publisher and filling out the opt-in form requesting information.

How can an ezine help you as a marketer?

There are basically three different ways that a marketer can use an ezine to his or her advantage:
Place ads in ezines

Run articles in ezines

Create joint ventures with the ezine publishers

One of the biggest advantages of ezine advertising for new marketers is that you don’t have to have your own list. Instead, you are going to be using the publisher’s list, for a small fee.

So here’s the gist of it: you create an ad to promote your product (or a product you are an affiliate for) and that ad gets sent to someone else’s (the publisher’s) list.

The publisher builds their list in a particular niche, they maintain a website for that niche, they create the newsletter or ezine, and they mail out for you. Pretty cool.

Types of ads:
Solo Ad: an ad that is mailed out by itself–not attached to any content–and can typically be of unlimited length.

Sponsor Ad: this ad generally has some size limitations, figure about 5 or 6 lines. Sponsor ads appear in the body of the ezine, so the reader will be getting content, your ad and some other ads. You will pay more for an ad at the top of the ezine because it gets more visibility than an ad at the bottom of the ezine.

Classified Ad: just like in a newspaper, these are very short, typically 3 lines. They will have small bit of copy and a call to action.

How much should I expect to pay?

Ezine advertising is very cost effective. You can expect to pay about $100 for solo ad sent to 50,000 people, but some are less expensive and some can be quite expensive! Keep in mind that this traffic is targeted to your niche–presuming you have selected the appropriate ezine, of course!

Just like a print newspaper or magazine, the exact cost of your ad will vary based on the type of the ad and how many subscribers that ezine has. Of course that is the official subscriber base. An ezine may also be forwarded to friends and colleagues by a subscriber and you can benefit from that additional traffic, but that isn’t really quantifiable. Just consider that the extra cherry on your slice of advertising pie!
