Do you have more than one list? You probably don’t know your list members as individuals, even if your list is only 10 members. As your list grows, a few might email you from time to time and you’ll probably know them, just a little. But what about each list segment? Do you know what they want? Do you know what words they use—their “buzzwords”? Do you know where they hang out?
When you’re selling more than one product, or working in more than one niche, all of these questions are important when it comes to list maintenance. Remember, your list is made up of people, not aimless email addresses without a heart and soul. That may be all you see, but you need to remember that your niche list has certain expectations from you, and if you don’t live up to them, you’ll have more than your fair share of unsubscribes.
So, how do you know what they expect?
There are several ways, actually. If you’re marketing products from an area where you aren’t completely familiar, then, you’ll need to do some research. One great way is to find groups through Google or Yahoo Groups. Plug in keywords from the niche where you want to build your list. So, for instance, let’s say you’re selling radio control cars. If you plug “radio controlled cars +FAQs” into Google Groups, you’ll come back with a whole list of frequently asked questions. Since you’re not terribly familiar with the hobby, but you really love the car your son just bought and think it’s a great niche to market in, then these FAQs can be a goldmine of information. I found a whole “FAQ for Newbies” in this niche, and you’ll find buzzwords like “table top RC cars,” RTR or “ready to run” cars, and what’s an “RC servo”? You’d better find out.
You see, the whole thing is, if you don’t speak to the people on your list the way someone who really loves and knows about RC cars would, then, you won’t come off as believable, and you’ll probably never gain much trust.
So, where do the RC car enthusiasts hang out?
There are several places that you can look for people in your niche market. Since we’ve already talked about Google’s and Yahoo’s Groups, you obviously know that you can find people there, and it’s a good idea to spend some time in groups about RC cars, learning a little about what you’re trying to sell. But what about approaching webmasters, too? Here’s an idea:
Search Google for RC cars. You’ll see a whole list of sites that have to do with RC cars. Find the sites that don’t have the product you want to sell. Then, email the webmasters and start building a relationship. Tell them you’re new to RC cars and maybe ask a few questions. Once you’ve hit it off, mention that you have this great product that you really like yourself, and that he or she should try it, too. Now, if it’s a $24.95 item, and you’re getting a 50% commission, might it be worthwhile to spent $12.50 to send it to this person? If they like it, too, then, you have to tell him that you’ll give him a commission from every sale for a link to your squeeze page on his site. The thank you page in your autoresponder will be your affiliate page for the product. If he knows you well enough to trust that you’ll send the money, then, you’re in good shape, but you may need to get some kind of affiliate software to handle sales. It will be worth the expense in the long run. When the webmaster agrees to use your link, bingo! You have your first affiliate–someone out there doing the work for you so that you don’t have to. You’ve found a way to make passive income!
Just be sure that the site gets traffic. If the Alexa ranking is over 100,000 and the site has no PR, you can bet that few people frequent the place. Yet, you really are in a very narrow market, when you’re advertising precisely to the people who are interested in your niche and want to buy. The Alexa doesn’t have to be 15 for you to score. Don’t leave it at one webmaster, either, and this is a good reason to buy an affiliate program of your own. Approach several webmasters and you’ll have those multiple streams of income you need all set up.
List building and marketing to your list is a process. First, you need to be sure that people want the product you’re interested in selling. You have to have a great squeeze page, and you have to be creative about driving traffic to it. The reason many marketers fail is because they skip these critical steps. Don’t be one of them. Find a great niche, and then lay the brickwork of your foundation. You’ll see much better results.
