When you think of list building, you may think about squeeze pages, joint ventures, ad swaps, or one of the many other ways that you can be growing your list. But there’s one way that has probably never crossed your mind–starting a membership site. Having a membership site, where people can get information they want to have about your niche, can be an extremely fast way to get your list building strong.

The fastest way to grow your list is by offering a free membership site. There are many of these sites online, and you probably even belong to a few. Free sites are great for getting people onto your list because people are much more likely to sign up if they don’t have to shell out. You may be thinking it’s silly to offer something free, but there’s lots of money to be made on the back end. So, you place an ad in an ezine and suddenly, you have a membership base that’s growing.

After people sign up, you can offer them something else of value and be paid. For example, let’s say you’re setting up a membership site about quilting. You have some patterns in there, some techniques, and so on and they’re ideas and plans that people really love. People write to you to tell you how pleased they are with the content. You’re getting new members every day, just because the people already on your list are telling their friends.

Membership sites help you to create a rapport with the people on your list. Because they have seen what’s inside your membership site, they’ll be more willing to buy from you, because you’ve established an element of trust. They have already seen that you know what you’re talking about when it comes to your niche because you have shown them your expertise. So, though you may balk at the idea of having a free site, you’ll make money from the list that your site has created over a long period of time. You will continue to offer them products or services in your niche as an affiliate marketer, or when you create your own product, you’ll have an audience ready to buy. The list you create will no doubt be responsive, if you treat them respectfully.

Another thing to consider about a free membership site is that it also lends itself to a finite model. You don’t have to keep adding the site month, after month, and take up your time. Yet, you can keep gaining in list members from the mere fact that your membership site exists. If you continue to drive traffic to the site, your list will continue to grow all the time.

The whole key is to look at the big picture. List building is the most important activity in your business, and your list is your most valuable asset. If starting up a free membership site is a way to help that happen more quickly, it’s a win-win situation. You get people on your list, and make your site members happy with the quality content you’ve provided inside. Isn’t it worth the effort?
