Do you have a new product to sell? Has anything changed in your company? Did you do anything newsworthy? Create a new partnership? Anything? If you have done something worth telling the world about, a press release is definitely the way to go. Not only will you get traffic, but you’ll make sales and be list building at the same time. Have you ever thought about list building with press releases? It’s a great way to beef up your Internet marketing list!

The first thing you have to know about press releases is not to cry wolf. If you don’t have a news worthy topic, don’t send a press release because people will catch on if they see too many worthless articles. However, you can send one about anything that’s new going on with your Internet marketing or other business, even if it’s only to tell people that you’ve written and released a free report on your list building page. When you have hundreds of thousands of people looking at your headline, you want to make the most of it. Give them incomplete information in your release, and then, send them to your list building page to sign up for the free report top get it all.

To begin writing, try to tie your release into something that’s happening in the world, a current event. For instance, the whole world seems to be fascinated by Paris Hilton for some reason, or there’s always presidential news, or maybe think about movie stars, strange facts, or anything that’s currently being talked about in the media already. Then, just tie your Internet marketing product to it. One of our recent press releases was “While Johnny Depp Smashes the Box Office, Knudson Hits Home with Quality Information.” That got more hits faster than one on George W. Bush in the same week. More than 1,000 people read it in the first 48 hours. That’s advertising!

Also use a sub-headline, which sums up the why you’re writing the release in one sentence: “On June 5, 2007, Tellman Knudson, CEO of Overcome Everything, Inc., kicked off his phenomenal executive series, The Ultra Marketing Marathon. In the first of seven webinars, marketing mega-star Russell Brunson laid out his secret system of generating unstoppable cash through affiliate marketing.” The sub-headline should be in italics.

The next step is to write the body of your release. Fashion it after a story that you might read in the newspaper. In the first paragraph, tell the who, what, when, where, and why. Then, give just a bit more information in the body of the release, and include a direct quote or two. Go and read a few newspaper articles or some actual press releases before you start writing, which will help you to give you some form. Be sure to include your URL in the body of the release, at least twice, but not more than that or the service will reject your release for URL spamming.

When you’ve finished with the body, you need to write an “About” paragraph, which is a little about your company. Again, remember the 5 W’s–who, what, when, where, why. Who started the company, when, where is it located, and what’s it’s purpose (the why)? This should be short, only about four or five sentences.

The contact information comes next and that should state the person’s name who is available for questions or setting up interviews. Also include a telephone number and include the URL again. Directly after that, type in the symbol string ###, which in newspaperland means “end,” and it signals the service that your press release has ended.

But you haven’t finished writing. You’ll probably need a short description of what you’ve just finished writing. This is a three to four sentence summary of the press release, which is what will be shown in the search results, so be sure to craft this carefully. Don’t make it a sales blurb; just give those 5-Ws, like you did in the first paragraph of your release. Make people want to read your release and ultimately visit your list building page.

And that’s it. The whole release shouldn’t be more than one page, so we’re talking a 4-5 paragraph article. When you’ve polished and are ready to go, there are several press release services online and many of them are free. Of course, paid is always better than free, so you decide how important your message is to you. The whole thing is to get people interested in your news. When you’ve done that, you’ll get tons of traffic, jumpstart your list building efforts, and make more money in your Internet marketing business, too. What could be better than that?
