How important is list building? I know I ask that question a lot, and some people just don’t get it. List building is everything! Without a list, you probably won’t make much money. But with everyone out there asking for names and email addresses, what are the chances you’ll be able to compete, if you’ve just started out online?
Pretty slim. Unless, of course, you engage people’s interest in your list building quest.
One way to really get people interested is by creating videos. You may be saying to yourself, “Argh! I don’t want people to see me,” but why? Maybe you think people will laugh at you. Maybe you think you don’t look good in front of a camera. Or, maybe you’re leery of the equipment. You haven’t run video software before and it intimidates you. Don’t let it!
Because you’re reading this, I’ll assume that you know how Google just bought You Tube for $1.65 billion. How hot is that? Google knows that video can have a huge impact online, and if you use your videos to be list building, you’ll be amazed at its power. Having your smiling face in your video will increase trust, and improve your list building numbers. Don’t be shy! But if you are, there is another way to make a video without ever being on camera.
But to start with the basics, you can use webcams, which are very inexpensive. Some of them even come with software to help you make movies. Or, pick up software like CamStudio, which is an inexpensive program, or if you really want to go big, use Camtasia to make your videos. It just depends on how much you want to spend. Once you have the hardware and software installed, then hit the record button. You’re ready to rock.
After the video is finished, you’ll probably need to do a bit of editing. This isn’t an issue if you have a PC because Widows comes with Windows Movie Maker, which works pretty well when you’re only making short videos. Practice with it a little, and you’ll see how easy it is to operate.
After editing, you’ll want to upload it to Google Video and You Tube, at least. Because those sites get the most traffic, they’re prime, but you may also want to upload to places like DailyMotion, Flurl, and Blip,tv. There are actually a ton of sites out there, but it does take a while for a video to upload, so decide how much time you want to spend. The more times your video is seen, though, the better off you’ll be.
So, how does that help with list building? Well, as with any Web 2.0 site, you’ll be adding “tags” to your video. These are nothing more than keywords that help people find your work. So, if your niche is list building and Internet marketing, like mine is, you’d use tags like “list building,” “email marketing,” “opt-in list,” “Internet marketing,” etc. But what is really cool is adding your URL to your video. You can do this by way of captioning, or just by holding up a sign with your URL on it.
But your face really never has to be on camera at all. Instead of using live action, you can also use photos that pertain to what you’re talking about in your video. So, you still need to give an audio presentation, but you can use one static image as your video background or do a slideshow of images. It doesn’t matter.
You don’t need to record the audio specially for the video, either. If you do teleseminars, you can get a snippet of one of those as audio for your video. Just keep it to around three minutes. Otherwise, you’ll probably lose some people. Attention spans online just aren’t that long.
Be sure to track your visitors, too. See how effective your video is. I think you’ll be surprised. But you have to try new things. Don’t let the technology stop you. Otherwise, you’ll be left far behind with no list at all.
