Too Many Gurus in the Soup?

When you’re new in online business, you may experience a syndrome we call “newbie overwhelm,” and don’t sweat it. It happens to everyone. You’re so anxious to learn what you need to know to do business online that you sign up for every bit of free training you can get. What happens is that you end up on dozens of lists and those gurus are emailing you at least once a day.

What can you do?

The first thing you need to figure out is whose marketing message means the most to you? Who is your perfect “guru”? When you know, you’ll know. Then, you should just follow that one person, and forget everyone else. Unsubscribe from all the lists that you joined, except that person’s list and learn all that he or she can teach you.

And all the materials you bought? Well, some of them are going to be too advanced for you. So, just put them aside until you’re ready to learn them. For example, it’s very hard to figure out how pay-per-click marketing works, unless you understand that you need a squeeze page, and if you don’t know what that is, well…

Concentrate on someone who teaches the basics first. You need to understand how to set up your online business and you need to begin lead generation immediately. You need to collect names and email addresses from people who are interested in your niche, and who will come to know, like, and trust you because of the information you provide them. So, starting with lead generation — the tactics and technical aspects — is where you need to begin. Your list contains the people who will be your customers.

Choose Products

The next steps are picking some affiliate products to sell people and then, loading up your autoresponder with messages about problems that people have in your niche. At the end of your article, you offer a niche-related product as a solution. This is how you make money in affiliate marketing.

If you think it’s critical to have your own product, it’s not. In fact, you shouldn’t think about having your own product until you’ve made at least $100,000 online selling someone else’s. With your own product, you have customer support, fulfillment, and affiliate payments to handle.

With someone else’s product all the hard work is done for you. Plus, if you’re a new copywriter, they probably have a better conversion rate for their sales letters than you could ever hope for.

Wait. Think. Learn.

When you know more about how the whole online business scene works, only then will you be ready to market your own products.

Building an online business isn’t really that difficult, but it can be frustrating and overwhelming when you don’t have any idea about what it is you’re doing. Choosing one system to follow will solve most of the overwhelm. Once you learn all you need to know from that one guru, then you can move on to more advanced tactics and structures for your business.
