When marketers think of membership sites, some of them shy away. “It’s too much work,” “I don’t have time,” and “I don’t need another traffic sink,” might be some of their responses. But a membership site can actually become the cornerstone of your business. Here are a few reasons why:
1) Constant Income: membership sites provide a steady income for your business. No more depending on every email you send for your daily income because the membership site makes that money for you. More income is just gravy, right? If you like a lot of interaction with members, you can run an open-end membership site where you continually add new content and spend a lot of time with your members. Or, you can have a limited membership site, where you limit the content and maybe even the number of members. The income is passive because all the content delivery is via email. You do the work once and you’re good to go. As long as you continue to add new members, you’ll continue to make money. The type of site you choose depends on what you want to accomplish.
2) Expert Positioning: you become the expert because you are responsible for the content, whether you create it or not. The content should be high quality, and strictly about your niche–something you know and are passionate about. If you are new at something, you may not be ready for a membership site or you’re just in the wrong niche. Providing information about something you really enjoy will be effortless and fun.
3) To Build Your List: Membership sites, whether free or paid, are a great way to be list building. Free membership sites will, of course, build your list faster. More people will join the site just because it’s free. So, build a list or make money? It’s not really a hard choice. What’s cool is that if you build your list faster, you’ll naturally make money faster, too. People who know you will respond to your recommendations more easily. If you don’t have much of a list, it’s better to have a free site because then, you’ll be guaranteed members.
Though there are probably many more reasons for having a membership site, these are the biggest. You can stabilize your income, become an expert in your niche, and build your list at the same time. Those are three pretty important reasons for having a membership site. Start planning. It might be easier than you think.
