In our first article, we discussed what a press release is and why they’re important to your Internet marketing business. In part 2, we went over the structure of a press release and how it should be written. Today, let’s discuss PRWeb, and why putting a press release there is very important to your release being seen.

PRWeb is one of the biggest and most respected press release centers on the Web. Because of its size and stature, most Internet marketing people look to PRWeb first to get their announcement out to the world. Though there are many free distribution services out there, PRWeb ranks high because it allows you to submit releases that include not just hyperlinks back to your site, but pictures, podcasts, and video, as well. But it will cost you between $80 and $360 to place a release at that site.

At the $80 level, you can add your release without bells and whistles, but it’s still a great way to get out your information, and the amounts go up as the benefits increase. At the $360 level, for instance, you can add video. The best bang for your buck probably comes from the $200 release. For that amount, you can add anchor text to your release, and a picture. The picture feature is great because they drive people’s eyes to your headline in a very long list of releases. Though folks might stumble on it anyway, the picture is a very powerful way to get anyone who comes to the site to see the picture and to read further.

The $200 level also allows you to add social bookmarking tags for Technorati, which is the oldest and biggest blog search engine online. Bookmarking your press release is great because people in the blogosphere will see it, as well as people coming strictly to PRWeb. You get a wider audience and probably more clicks, trackbacks from blogs that your release relates to, and more traffic.

When you upload your press release, regardless of what site you’re uploading to, be sure that you follow the editorial guidelines. Press release editors are even more strict than article directory editors, and they will send the release back to you if you’re reporting about something that’s poorly written. Take some time to write the release, following the outline we gave you in Part 2 of this series, and you’re likely to have very little problem. But if you’re unsure, don’t worry. The editors are very willing to help you make your release publishable, especially after they’ve been paid.

Never underestimate the power of a press release. They can help drive targeted traffic to your website and get your message out to the masses. That’s what Internet marketing is all about, right? If no one knows about your business, you won’t do very well. Get the word out by writing press releases. If you’re nervous about using the high-cost sites, then stick to the free sites, until you’re comfortable with writing them. Just don’t neglect to do it. Press releases are powerful tools that your Internet marketing business can’t afford to overlook.

The previous article in this series got you acquainted with press releases and showed you how they can be an important part of your Internet marketing business. They provide great publicity, driving media people and consumers alike to your Internet marketing business for a closer look. In this article, let’s discuss how a press release is written.

As with any type of copywriting, the headline is always the most important part of your press release. When it’s published, your press release’s headline will be among many others, so you want something that makes your press release stand out. Aside from interest, you also want to increase the likelihood of pick-up by a search engine or news service, so you should also use appropriate keywords to make that happen. But the best way to attract viewers is by tying your headline into some current event. If you check out GoogleNews.com, you can find the latest stories and find something happening–something that people are searching for–at the time that the press release is written. Usually something in the pop culture works best. For instance, one of our headlines was, “While Johnny Depp Smashes the Box Office, Knudson Hits Home with Quality Information.” It was written about the time the third Pirates of the Caribbean movie was in theaters.

But don’t neglect the next part of your press release–your subheadline. This tells readers what your release is about. In the release quoted above, this was the subheadline: “On June 5, 2007, Tellman Knudson, CEO of Overcome Everything, Inc., kicked off his phenomenal executive series, The Ultra Marketing Marathon. In the first of seven webinars, Internet marketing mega-star Russell Brunson laid out his secret system of generating unstoppable cash through affiliate marketing.” Now, this is more than one sentence, so you might call it a “summary” of what’s going on in the release.

The main body of your press release is your story, and it should give the who, what, when, where, and why of the announcement you’re making. It begins with a dateline, like this: Brattleboro, VT June 27, 2007. Then go into your story, the event that you want to announce. If you’re writing about a new product that your company is launching, be sure to get a quote from someone in the company. Ask what the product will do, why it’s better than anything out there, and when it will be unveiled, and then sprinkle some of those quotes through the release. Just be sure to keep the release in third person (he, she, it, his, hers, its, they, their, theirs) and don’t use first person (I, me, mine).

Be sure to use your main keyword for your Internet marketing business in the body of your press release, to help your site rank in the search engine results. Use it to a density of around 2%, so that if your keyword phrase is “Internet marketing,” for example, you should use the phrase about five times in your release. Many more time than that, and your press release probably won’t sound natural. Plus, Google might think you’re keyword stuffing and penalize you for it. You don’t want that! The easiest way to find out what your density is to plug your writing into http://live-keyword-analysis.com and the software will tell you instantly.

The “About the Company” section of your press release tells readers a little about your Internet marketing company–who owns it, when it was opened, and its purpose. This should be a brief paragraph of no more than three to five sentences.

Contact information is the next section of the release and you should include as much as possible. Provide the name of your Internet marketing business again, the person to contact, their email address, telephone number, and FAX, if possible. In our last article, we discussed how media people or other website owners may pick up your release and want more information. Give them as many ways to contact you or someone in your Internet marketing business as possible.

And that’s pretty much it. Writing a press release isn’t terribly difficult, but they are structured and the form needs to be followed. Sites like PRWeb will expect it, and well talk more about uploading your release to that site in our next article…

Internet Marketing: Press Release Traffic, Part 1

When Internet marketing, there are 17 great ways to drive traffic to any website, and one of the most powerful ways is through writing press releases and adding them to press release sites. So, just what is a press release?

A press release is the announcement of something important happening in your company. Maybe you’re launching a new website or product. Maybe you’re holding a special fire sale or someone in your company received a prestigious award. All of these are good reasons for writing a press release. The fact that you just posted to your blog is not. Save press releases for special events and people will take notice.

The reason a press release is so powerful is that they’re Google fodder, and in Internet marketing, Google is very, very powerful. We cater to the whims of Google because it brings the most traffic to our sites, and the traffic just converts better. Google is the current Internet marketing go-by in whatever you do. And Google just loves press releases.

Press releases are easily spidered, meaning that they’re text based, and search engine robots (called spiders) can easily navigate through the page. Both Google and Google News love them. If you write your press release with one keyword in mind (and it should be one you want your site to rank in the search engines for), the spiders will gather what the content is about and list your release in their results pages for that keyword.

Now, here’s the other great thing… Press releases provide search engine optimization (SEO) advantage for your website because when you hyperlink your keyword, it’s a one-way link pointing back to your website. Google counts those one-way links as votes for your site. All one-way links are counted this way, but when they’re from a site like PRWeb, which has a high Google page rank, that’s even better. The reputation of the page linking back to your site is great and you get some of that benefit. You can easily find any site’s page rank, if you download the Google toolbar or install the add-on for Firefox called “Search Status.”

Press releases are scanned by people in the media, who are outside the Internet marketing world, too. You could get some additional publicity if a local or even national newspaper, radio, or even television see your press release and want to know more. It happens every day. Media people are always looking for a new story, and press releases are a great way for them to find content. So, they spend some time looking through press release sites to get a story.

Not all press release sites are created equally, though. Before uploading your release, be sure to check on the site’s traffic by going to Alexa.com, which measures website traffic, and seeing what the PR site’s ranking is. If you see that it’s above 100,000, you may want to reconsider uploading to that site because it probably gets limited traffic, which means your release will have a low chance of being seen.

Those are some basic press release guidelines that apply to any Internet marketing business. In our next article, let’s learn how to write a press release to get your Internet marketing business seen…
