People often ask me, “How do you go about approaching the big affiliates for promoting your product? Do you offer them a higher commission? Is there any protocol you have to follow, or is it pretty much the same as approaching any other J-V partner?” And yet, the people that they want to approach have absolutely nothing to do with their Internet marketing niche.
Here’s the deal… I wouldn’t even approach those people. The reason I say that is because an Internet marketing affiliate is only as good as their list responding to you and your offer. If these people don’t offer any products in your niche or genre, then the translation is that there’s a pretty darn good chance that their list doesn’t care about that product or that topic you’re offering.
That’s not what they built their Internet marketing list around. This is a really interesting point. I remember once I had a Black Diamond Line student that was trying to get me to promote an ebook about cats or something. They said, “You have five cats. You talk about having cats in your home office. Why won’t you promote my ebook about cats?”
I said, “Because my list doesn’t care about cats. I’m sure there are people on my list who care about cats.”
They said, “Why don’t you promote it to get the people who care about cats to respond?”
The reason is because there are people on my list who care about every possible topic imaginable. For example, do you think everybody on my list might brush their teeth in the morning? I hope that the large percentage of people on my list brush their teeth in the morning. Now maybe I’m wrong in that, but I hope they do. That doesn’t mean I’m going to start promoting toothpaste to my list. I’m not the dental authority; I’m the list-building authority.
On the other hand, if I had a list about how to get rid of gingivitis, and you have an amazing toothpaste that helps to promote healthy gums, or dental floss, toothbrush, ointment or whatever, that helps to promote healthy gums, helps to eliminate bad breath or whatever, now we have a winner. But I’m not going to promote your ebook about cats to my list. It doesn’t make any sense.
Internet marketing via JV partners is great. It’s the fastest, easiest way to get traffic and to increase the size of your list. But it has to make sense. If you’re in the self-improvement niche, then only JV with other people in the self-improvement niche, who have built an Internet marketing list around people interested in self-improvement. Not only will you have more success, but you’ll have an easier time getting partners.

Check it out. Basically, here’s what you want to do to put your list building efforts on another level, especially when you’re going out on your own and connecting up with people and meeting people. What you want to do is you want to aim for people in your niche, with lists of 2,000 to 3,000 people.
You want to do two things. The first thing you want to do is set up a cross-promotion for later this week, preferably today or tomorrow, because most people aren’t going to be as flexible as you are about when they’re going to be willing to send, so you want to be put the pressure on them. With Internet marketing that’s usually the key. People are so busy that you just have to keep on them.
Basically, say, “I would like to promote you if you’re willing to promote me. What do you say? Can you send out on Thursday and Friday of this week? Great! Me, too. Let’s cross-promote. You send me your emails. I’ll send you my emails. We need to join each other’s affiliate programs. Here are the links to do that.”
You join each other’s affiliate programs. The first couple times you do it, you’re going to kind of have to find a link to your affiliate program, then you’re going to have to figure some details out, but that’s all part of Internet marketing and ultimately, right now you’re aiming to work with people with 2,000 to 3,000 people on their lists who have similar promotional power to you. Doing this you’ll be list building much more quickly.
Then what you want to do, when they say yes, is you want to Golden Rule them. You say, “Great. It looks like you have some good stuff here. Would you be interested in some ongoing traffic to your site?” Nine times out of 10, they’re going to say yes. What Internet marketing business doesn’t want more traffic?
You’re going to say, “Not only will I do this one-time promotion for you, but I’ll also put your emails into my autoresponder series if you’re willing to do the same thing for me. What do you say?” That way, you’re not just doing the one-shot. You’re list building and getting traffic, besides.
You get the one-shot nailed because most people who have a list that’s smaller, less than 10,000 people, the only thing they’re thinking about is one-shot. They’re not thinking long-term yet because they’re probably just getting into Internet marketing, too. Now, likewise, I know there are people who have a list that’s a similar size to yours who, I’m guessing if they’re smart, would be willing to work with you on this. They need to be list building just like you do.
The key here is that most of them will have never heard of Golden Rule. Only my students even know what Golden Rule is, so just keep that in mind. Then basically say, “I’m going to put two messages into my autoresponder series, so whenever I get anyone to join my list, you’ll be getting traffic on an ongoing basis.” That’s really the key.
List building can be done much quicker if you’re list building with joint ventures. Find some Internet marketing people who are just starting out or who have just started list building, like you, and work with them. They basically have the same needs as you do. Help them to be list building and selling their products, too.
