The World’s First Spam Email
Did you know that the first spam email was sent on May 1, 1978? The Internet was hardly a twinkle back then, and used mainly by the Defense Department. The first spam message was an advertisement to more than 300 people in ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network) to advertise a new type of DEC (Digital Equipment Company) computer. But back then, it wasn’t called spam. Nobody had even thought to do it because the Internet just wasn’t in the same state it is today back then.
Today, unsolicited bulk email carries the term spam. It can actually refer to several kinds of media, but you hear it most often applied to email marketing. But allow me to educate you, not all marketing email is spam, and it’s definitely NOT spam if people have willingly given you their names and email addresses and agreed to receive mail from you.
You can’t consider that mailing out to these people is “spamming” them. You agreed to mail to them when they gave you their information. You need to provide great content for them, and to build a relationship. And you need to use that list to create income for yourself. That’s not spamming, it’s called “email marketing,” and it’s probably the best thing since sliced bread.
You can worry about offending your list. The natural tendency of the list is there’s going to be attrition. Every time you send an email to your list, there are going to be people who unsubscribe for whatever reason. Either they’re no longer interested in what you’re saying, they think you’re emailing them too much or you haven’t emailed them enough, and they don’t know who the heck you are.
Maybe they’re just having a bad day, who knows, but that’s something that you definitely don’t want to focus on. Do not focus on the people who unsubscribe from your list. That’s not to say that you want to ignore it, though.
If you find that 100% of the people who receive your first message unsubscribe, well maybe there’s a problem there. There is definitely something that is not going well. Usually if people opt into your list, it’s because they’re interested in what you have to offer.
When you communicate with them, you’re going to be providing them information and value and offering them resources that are going to help them with the reason why they opted in to your list to begin with.
The biggest fear that I think a lot of people have is, if I start emailing my list all the time with offers, they’re going to unsubscribe. What I found was actually the opposite. The more I emailed my list, the more I stay in front of them, the more money I make. The unsubscribe rate really kind of stays the same.
It all comes down to testing and you’ll want to test this on your own list. Your list is almost a living, breathing creature. You’ll actually start to see who your list is, what they react to, what they don’t react to.

Deep Fried Bull Testicles? Chew on This
Yes, believe it or not, this manly meal has a niche market in parts of Montana, and if people can sell deep fried bull testicles and people actually eat them (which they do at the “Testicle Festival” each year in Missoula), you can sell anything. There is always a market somewhere for what you want to sell. It might be a small market, but unless you’re selling squirrel coats, you probably can start a business.
Yet, it’s much easier to start marketing with someone else’s product. If you do that, the quickest way to increase your sales is by marketing a product that converts well. That’s the quickest way. But there’s also a way you can do it that will increase conversions with your own list.
One thing you can do is a product review. You could create a web page that reviews the product. You could say, “I just read such and so and there are some pluses and some minuses to it,” and be really honest about it. Just have it end on a really positive, uplifting, good note. “I highly recommend this product who wants to do X, Y, or Z.” Then have that drive through your affiliate link. That way you can put up your own web page.
Another idea if you want to increase response is to do a teleseminar with the person who created the product and sell the product through the teleseminar. I guarantee that will increase some sales.
You could do an audio postcard that is an audio review of the product and has your affiliate link underneath the audio button. All of these things are options. You can’t change the sales page that you’re driving to. You can only change how excited people are about getting to that sales page before they get there. Does that make sense?
The other thing you can do is you can run an ASK campaign, you can run a survey to your list, asking them what their biggest questions are about your niche, for example. Then you answer their questions and have the next step be to go buy XYZ product that really goes into this topic in detail.
So send a few emails out to your list, put an email in your autoresponder with an ASK campaign. You can use the ASK Database to do that. What you’re looking for are ways to interact with your subscribers in order to get them more active and to get them to trust you more.
The whole idea is building up that relationship with your subscribers. I think that you’ll find that to be a really useful idea. SEO – Where to Start?
Everyone in business soon learns that the best traffic comes from the search engines, and they’re anxious to see their websites in the search engine results pages (SERPs). A set series of actions will help to insure that this happens, but it won’t happen overnight. You have to have a set plan of action.
To perform search engine optimization (SEO) properly, you want to get page rank for every page in your site, but it’s not possible to do that overnight. The best thing to do is to start with your home page, the page you want people to go to see your offer or opt-in to your list or whatever it is, and work with that because Google ranks pages, not whole websites.
But it doesn’t have to be that difficult. Here are three simple steps that will boost your rankings in search:
1. Diligent keyword research
Go to any keyword discovery tool, like Google’s External Keyword Discovery tool, and plug in a very generic term for your niche. Then, look down the list and start refining from there. Find words that apply to your niche and dig down. See if there are other more specific terms that people are searching for. The more specific your keyword, the more likely the searcher is looking to buy.
Be sure that the keyword has between 3,000 and 10,000 searches a month, and that will usually be a term that isn’t quite as competitive as others. Yet, it will still get enough traffic to drive your business.
Check out the competition for that keyword by typing it into Google and seeing what comes back. See how many links the top sites have, and if you can compete. If you find that every site on page 1 has a gazillion backlinks and have all been online a long time, you probably want to select a different keyword. If not, you have probably found a good keyword. Select 3 – 5 good long-tail (very specific) phrases to use in your marketing.
2. On page optimization
The most important things for on-page optimization are your title and your Meta description tags, which are found in the section of the HTML for your page. You need a good, keyword rich title and description, and the keyword that you want to rank most for should be first in both cases. The title can be your three main keyword phrases, separated by hyphens or it can use your keywords and still be selling the click-through from the SERPs. Just be sure that you use your most important keyword first.
Use the keywords in the copy for your site, too. Be sure to use them in headlines and sprinkle them throughout the text. Just be sure you’re not trying to put them where they don’t belong. Keep your tone natural, but try to use the keywords early as the prominence of your keywords is an important factor.
3. Off page optimization
Links are still important to SEO, and you should get as many backlinks to your website as possible. Join quality directories, like DMOZ.org, the Yahoo directory, and JoeAnt.com. Any directory that is edited by humans and not just what Google considers to be a “link farm” will help.
Entries to directories produce one-way links, which are the kind of links that really propel your SEO. Also get links back from your blog, article directories, other websites, blog commenting, press releases, and the Web 2.0 social sites like Twitter and YouTube. All of the one-way links pointing back will provide a “vote” for your site. The more votes you have, the higher your ranking will become.
SEO can be as simple or as complicated as you have time for. The better your keyword selection, the more likely it is that you can get your page to rank just following these three bits of advice alone. Visits to ClickBank Surpass Affiliate Programs
If you’re new at online marketing, the best possible avenue you can take when you’re starting out is affiliate marketing. That way, you can concentrate on lead generation, and selling products that are already proven to convert to your list. Not only that, but you won’t have to worry about support for the product, making refunds, or dealing with charge-backs, which take tons of time and effort.
So, how do you go about doing that?
It’s not difficult, really. Go to ClickBank.com and find cool product that have something to do with your niche. Then, buy the product and try it, and if you find that the product is of good quality, offer it to your list and earn an affiliate commission.
ClickBank handles the money, so you don’t have to worry about being paid. Promoting for individuals is often questionable. You may not be paid or the sale may not record properly, or for whatever reason, ClickBank has your back. They make perfectly certain that the sales system is working before they’ll even approve the product, so you’re covered.
When you’re creating your own product down the line, it’s still a good idea to promote it through ClickBank. That way, you don’t have to set up an affiliate program to have other people selling your product for you. And as when you’re an affiliate for someone else, ClickBank takes care of paying your affiliates, too.
Having an affiliate program installed on your server can be convenient, but it’s not practical, especially when you’re new at Internet marketing and no one knows who you are. ClickBank is a trusted resource, and having the company handle your transactions will allow affiliates to feel more secure. Then, more people will sign up and you’ll ultimately make more sales.
Yet, starting with affiliate marketing before even considering creation of your own product is a smart move. Learn how to set up a whole system of effective lead generation and affiliate marketing that is proven to work by following the course of action prescribed in the ListBuilding Club.
