Did you know that of the 435 Congresspeople sitting in the House today, more than half of them are millionaires? That’s not really representative of the general population at all, or you’d probably be a millionaire, too. Well… I am a millionaire, and I didn’t get the money by sitting in Congress. I got it from hard work on line… Internet marketing.

Now, I have my own products, but when I first started, I sold other people’s products. I was an affiliate marketer, and if you’re smart, that’s how you’ll start out with your online business, too. I managed to make more than $800,000 in my first year of affiliate marketing, so it’s a very lucrative way to get started. Plus, the product creator does all of the fulfillment and handles the customer service, so it’s a much easier way to start.

If you haven’t begun lead generation efforts, that’s the first step. You need to set up a way to collect people’s names and email addresses, if you don’t already have a list, because that is what will fuel your sales. You need to generate leads, people who you can bond with and who will come to know, like, and trust you — people who will accept the product recommendations you make.

Then, you need to ask those people what they want. Run a survey. Immediately after people opt in to your list, send them to a survey that asks, “What is your biggest question about [your niche].” So, it would be like, “What is your biggest question about gardening?” or “What is your biggest question about dogs training?” or whatever your niche is. Ask people what they need to know.

The next step is to go over to ClickBank and find products that people are looking for. Just go into the Marketplace over there and see what products will solve the issues people told you that they’re having in your niche. Make the product fit what your customers want. If your niche is a little obscure, you can try other places, too, such as Commission Junction.

It’s really important that you know these are quality products, too, because you don’t want to offer products that are no good. When you do that, you lose all the credibility you have built with your list. So, buy the product and try it first.

And that’s pretty much it. Build a list, ask the people on it what they want, and sell it to them. Simple! If you can do that, as your list continues to grow, and you continue to work at your business, you can be a millionaire, too.

But it takes hard work, and being a millionaire isn’t really typical of the average Internet marketer. Most of them are lazy and never make a dime. But there are two sides to the coin. Be sure that you’re on the winning side!

People think that success online comes quickly, and for some, it may look that way, but in reality, becoming rich takes years of study, time, and effort to make it happen. Here are the bios of six multi-millionaires and a brief glimpse at the foundations they laid before making it big online:

Tellman Knudson:

Though Mark is also a multi-millionaire, he really started his business when Internet marketing was practically nonexistent.

Matt Bacak:

Matt Bacak had some failures before becoming a success, but he started in business when he was 12 years old. Though his fan base is well over 300,000 people now, he has been an Internet marketer for more than 8 years. He worked very hard to get where he is today.

Alex Mandossian:

Alex has taught more people about teleseminar hosting than anyone else online. However, Alex started his online business back in 1991. In the past 18 years he has made more than $233 million in sales and profits. But Alex came online with a solid business background, and has consulted for some major U.S. businesses, like Dale Carnegie, Pinnacle Care, and 1Shopping Cart to name only three of them. His offline successes propelled him to online success, but it definitely didn’t happen overnight.

Rich Schefren

Rich formed Strategic Profits in 2004, and through it, he teaches online entrepreneurs to strategically build their businesses. People often wonder how they can build an Internet business, and that’s really not a hard question. Yet, they see the promises of online scammers who tell them they don’t need to work, that they can make a ton of cash overnight, and that they can sleep through the whole thing. That’s just wrong.

However, the steps to follow in creating an online business are really quite simple when you break them down, but you do need an entrepreneurial spirit. When things get hard, you can’t give up, and you have to be the type of person who’s good at solving problems because they will arise. But, if you think you’re game, here are the steps:

1. Lead generation: This means building a big email list that you can mail to at any time. You need to set up a squeeze page with an opt-in box that allows people to give you their information. And you need an autoresponder service that will provide the code for the box, store the names and email addresses, and allow you to mail out to your list whenever you like.

2. Traffic: You need to send traffic to the squeeze page you have built, and there are many ways to do it. You can write articles and submit them to article directories. You can write press releases, announcing any news involved with your business. You can write in a blog every day and send people to your squeeze page. You can also buy traffic for pay-per-click services and ezine advertising. But, there are many more forms of traffic to learn and use.

3. Affiliate Products: You’ll need something to sell, and instead of selling your own product, you’ll be better off selling products created by others. That way, you don’t have to deal with customer service, finance, or product creation until you have a good foothold online. You can find these products in affiliate product directories online, such as ClickBank or Commission Junction. But you need to buy them and try them yourself before offering them to your list. Offer a bad product once and your credibility will be severely damaged.

4. Consistency: Every good businessperson needs to be consistent with his or her marketing efforts. You can’t expect to write to the people on your list once per month and make money. It won’t work. You have to mail to your list at least three times a week, if not every day, to keep your momentum running.

5. Coaching: The steps above are not difficult to read about, but when you put them altogether, especially if you’re running a one-person show, you’ll need a mentor — a person or a company that can show you the way. There are many nuances in Internet marketing and if you don’t know what they are, you’ll have a much harder time becoming successful. Anyway, this is a very important tool that you need to have. Why? So you can build lists of names and email addresses. These are the people to whom you will send awesome information so that the folks on your list can come to know, like, and trust you. Then, they’ll accept the product recommendations you make and spend money. It also gives your a captive audience for any product you create in the future.

Here are some interesting ways that you can create buzz and be collecting names and email addresses for your list:

1. Create a squeeze page: Of course, this is the number one tool for lead generation. Offer potential subscribers something really cool for free and they will sign up for your list.

2. Blog: Add an optin box to your blog as soon as you install it. Once this is in place, you’re ready to start blogging every single day. Consistent posting is the secret to building a large audience.

3. Facebook: Set up a fan page at Facebook and add an optin box there. Tell all of your friends about it and ask them to become fans. The more fans your page has, the more folks who will come to look, if only from curiosity, and if you engage them, they’ll sign up for your list.

4. Tweet: Be sure to have a Twitter account. Give people lots of great information and get them re-tweeting your posts. Every now and then, like once a day, remind people of your free offer on the squeeze page, add your URL, and let your followers sign up for your list.

5. Social bookmarking: Bookmark your squeeze page in all the social bookmarking sites that make sense, like Digg, StumbleUpon, Mixx, Reddit, etc. Be sure to write a good comment–like a subtle sales message–for your post so that people will be intrigued.

There are tons of ways that you can pump up your lead generation efforts, if you’re a bit creative, like MacGyver. Just be thinking about building your list in any way you can, and you’ll be amazed at how all these little tricks can create a list to die for. So, you’re online and you want to make a ton of money overnight, right? You need to step back and check yourself, my friend. It’s not going to happen. You can absolutely, positively make a lot of money, but you have to do things right. And, if you make two fatal mistakes, you’ll probably never succeed.

The first mistake is to neglect lead generation. You may not think this is imperative, and that’s understandable, with all of the “get-rich-quick” programs out there. They have attractive young men and women convincing you that you don’t have to do a thing, that you can get rich while you sleep, and that they’ll do all of the work for you.

Don’t believe them!

Your first goal online… always and forever… should be lead generation. You need a list of people with like interests to send good information to so that they come to know, like and trust you. This is how you make sales online. Without the trust, people are naturally skeptical, and you’ll find it very hard to make any money at all.

You have to set up a squeeze page and send traffic to it. You need to put an opt-in box in every place you are able, such as at the top of your blog, on your profile at MySpace, on a Facebook fan page, and anywhere else it makes sense to do so. You should look for lead generation opportunities everywhere. And be building that list and your relationship with them.

So, that’s the second mistake — not keeping your list happy. You need to give them things. Send them great information or cool tools that they can use in their own businesses. And you have to be sure that whatever you send to them is within the realm of your niche.

For example, if you’re in the quilting niche, don’t send them information or offers about Internet marketing. They won’t be interested, and what will happen is that many of the people on that quilting list will just unsubscribe. You’ll have to start gaining their trust all over again.

Having a big list is great because, even when the economy is in a downturn, you’ll still make money. Some of the people on your list will still have jobs that they’re interested in getting away from and will spend money if you can help them to do that. Or, they have a hobby that they’ll pursue no matter how bad things get. You just have to decide who you want your list to be and then do everything you can to start growing it bigger and bigger and bigger.
